The Recycling Process

The main call of ScrapBarn is to recycle old fabrics and dry, thin and waste plastics. We make sure that the newly made yarn is hygienic, skin safe, quality tested and good to go for making the perfect products for you.

01. Cleaning

  • Initially the scrap is bleached, to remove any harmful germs and get rid of all old stains and dyes.

  • The scrap can be 'wet cleaned' or 'dry cleaned', depending on their material.

  • We often dry clean the synthetics, and wet clean the natural polymers.

  • For dry cleaning, the scrap is usually soaked in water free solvent, for example, tetrachloroethylene. After cleaning, they are steamed and air dried in the sun light.

  • For wet cleaning, any areas that need special attention are pre treated, and are then washed in a machine using water and environmentally friendly detergents. After washing, the scrap is dried using driers or may even be air dried.

02. Shredding & Dyeing

  • We employ specially crafted machines equipped with sharp blades or cutting mechanisms.

  • The scrap is fed into the shredder. The blades rapidly shred the scrap into smaller pieces or fibers.

  • The shredded materials are then separated and arranged into bundles.

  • The bundles are brushed and straightened out repeatedly, and then dyed in the desired color.

03. Spinning

  • Any debris from the shredded bundle are removed

  • They are spun in spinning machines to form yarn of desired color.

  • They are passed through rollers that rotate at high speeds while spinning the shredded materials into yarn.

  • The fibers end up getting tightly twisted together.

04. Creating Our Products

  • We tie up with artisans who live in remote places and build their business.

  • We transport our yarn to their small scale industry.

  • They intricately craft and create each of our products with care and precision.

  • The products they create are sold on our website.
